In 2015, Tesla launched the Model X as the world’s first electric SUV. It was initially offered in 60D trim with a combined 328 horsepower and a range of only 200 miles. Things have changed a lot since then, both for Tesla and for the electric SUV world, and we can now talk about electric SUVs with more than 1,000 horsepower under the hood and supercar-like performance figures. And while Tesla started the game, a lot of other makers have joined the party, most of them with the intention of offering us the most powerful vehicles in the world. Lotus, for example, is one of the latest newcomers to the EV market, and its Eletre R SUV promises to be the fastest dual-motor pure electric SUV in the world. But there is a lot more than that. Here’s the list of the most powerful electric SUVs in the world.

Faraday Future's electric SUV, the FF91, was supposed to go into production back in 2018, but because of some financial issues, the official production date was moved to 2023. And, in all honesty, the FF91 is worth the wait. The luxury SUV will be powered by three electric motors that deliver a combined 1,050 horsepower - making it the most powerful electric SUV in the world. The FF91 will come with lots of cool features, like autonomous-ready technology, but with very impressive performance figures. It will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 2.39 seconds and up to a top speed of 155 mph. Faraday is also promising a range of 381 miles - a figure that will also place it among the top most efficient electric SUVs in the world. The FF91 will be priced from $150,000.

Tesla announced the Model X Plaid in 2021 as the performance version of the standard Model X. Unlike the base Model X which features a dual motor setup, the Plaid got the same powertrain as the Model S Plaid: three electric motors: one powering the front wheels and two for the rear to go with a fancy torque vectoring system. Combined, the three-motor setup delivers a combined 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque, which makes the Model X the most powerful electric SUV in the world as of the time of this writing, but the second most powerful once the FF91 goes on sale. The Model X Plaid is also a very fast electric SUV, as it needs only 2.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph, and can hit a top speed of 149 mph. The Model X Plaid is priced at $107,400 and has a range of 333 miles.

Lotus revealed its first-ever production SUV back in 2022, with production scheduled to begin in 2023. The 2024 Eletre will be offered in three trims: Eletre, Eletre S, and Eletre R, with the latter currently being marked as the fastest dual-motor pure electric SUV in the world. The SUV is powered by two electric motors that deliver a combined 905 horsepower and 726 pound-feet of torque. The Eletre R is also a very fast SUV as it only needs 2.95 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph, and can hit a top speed of 165 mph. It has a range of 304 miles, but since it benefits from 800V architecture it needs only 20 minutes to recharge from 10 to 80 percent, so range will never be an issue. Prices should start from around $113,000.

Rivian unveiled the R1T back in 2021 as one of the world's first electric trucks, and the R1S followed shortly thereafter. Just like its truck sibling, the R1S comes in three configurations: dual-motor AWD, performance dual-motor AWD and quad-motor AWD. While the first two trims aren't exactly lacking power, the one you should buy is the latter one. It is powered by four electric motors - one for each wheel - that deliver a combined 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet of torque. It also needs 3.0 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph and offers a range of 321 miles. However, keep in mind that Rivian is also about to launch a Max Pack that will increase the range to 400 miles. The 2023 Rivian R1S quad-motor is priced at $92,000.

GMC's first electric vehicle, the Hummer EV truck, was unveiled in 2020, and the SUV followed a few months later. Even if they are built on the same platform and share the same design, the SUV is placed under the truck in GMC's lineup, but this doesn't mean it is not equally impressive. It comes in four trims: EV2, EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1, and in its most powerful configuration, it is powered by three electric motors: two placed on the rear axle and one on the front one. They deliver a combined 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, which even if under the truck's 1,000 horsepower, it still makes the GMC Hummer EV SUV one of the most powerful in the world. In this version, the Hummer EV SUV runs from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds (3.3 seconds with the launch control activated) and can hit a top speed of 106 mph. The range goes up to 314 miles, and using an 800-volt public DC fast charger, you can add up to 100 miles in just 12 minutes. The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 SUV is priced at $105,595.

At the end of 2022, AMG unveiled the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV - the company's first all-electric crossover. There are two trims to choose from, but for the U.S. market, customers will only get the EQE 53 version - a model powered by two electric motors that deliver a combined 677 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque (when also adding the Dynamic Plus package). It runs from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds as standard, but with the optional Dynamic Plus package the sprint time goes down to 3.2 seconds. The top speed goes up to 149 mph. The SUV is also very efficient with a total range of 300 miles. The new Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV is expected to go on sale later this year, with prices set to begin at $100,000.

Launched back in 2015, the Model X has a very long history on the market. Things have evolved a lot from the original Model X 60D trim that delivered a total of 328 horsepower and a range of 200 miles, so you can now list the Model X in the top ten most powerful electric SUVs in the world. In its base configuration, the Model X has a dual motor setup with a combined 670 horsepower, which is a lot under the Plaid trim, but still very impressive. In this configuration, the Model X runs from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 149 mph, while the range goes up to 348 miles – the best in its class. It has a starting price of $97,490.

Mercedes failed to give us an AMG version of the EQS SUV, but it did give the world the Maybach EQS 680 SUV. Placed on the top of the EQS SUV lineup, it shares the same powertrain with the EQS 580 SUV but has a lot more power. In the Maybach SUV, the two electric motors deliver a combined 649 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque - an increase of 113 horsepower and 67 pound-feet of torque over the EQS 580. For being a very large SUV, the Maybach EQS 680 SUV is also quite fast: it needs 4.1 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph and can hit a top speed of 130 mph. There are no details about the SUV's EPA-estimated range, but on the WLTP cycle, it goes up to 372 miles. Range, however, shouldn't be an issue, as the Maybach SUV can recover up to 136 miles of range in just 15 minutes at a fast charger. Prices should start in the $200,000 area.

Another cool SUV set to go on sale in 2023 comes from China. The model's name is EL7, and it comes from the same company that gave us the EP9 all-electric supercar. The SUV is, of course, not as powerful as the supercar, but it is still powerful enough to put lots of other electric SUVs to shame. The EL7 is powered by two electric motors that deliver a combined 644 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. And, while this output is not enough to put it on the top of the most powerful electric SUVs in the world, its range of 385 miles will surely make it one of the most efficient ones. The EL7 will also be fast, and will only need 3.8 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph. When put on sale, the EL7 is expected to be priced from about $78,500.

The company claims the iX M60 runs from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, but the guys over at MotorTrend did it in only 3.2 seconds. Like in most BMW models, top speed is limited to 155 mph. The iX M60 also has a range of 280 miles, which may sound like little in today's market, but the SUV can recover up to 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. Prices for the 2023 BMW iX M60 start from $111,500.
