The Ford Expedition was at the forefront of the SUV revolution when the Spice Girls were still topping the charts and the internet was still a relatively novel concept. The full-size SUV has continued to persevere, so much so that the model it originally replaced, the Bronco, has now not only been revived but also around enough years that we no longer really consider it new.

The Expedition has served as Ford’s SUV flagship since 1997, and as the model celebrates over 25 years in production, it was revamped in a big way for 2022, with the lineup now including a new off-road variant in the form of the Timberline Edition. The refreshed model features a revised interior with higher-quality materials and a more powerful optional V-6 engine. A nameplate isn’t able to stick around for the better part of three decades without such improvements, and with them, the 2022 Expedition remains firmly entrenched in the upper echelon of full-size SUVs.

2022 Ford Expedition Performance And Capability

Blue 2022 Ford Expedition

The Expedition is slightly more powerful for 2022 in lower trims while higher trims offer more grunt. All Expeditions are powered by a 3.5-liter, V-6 EcoBoost engine that delivers 380 horsepower and 470-pound feet of torque in XL, XLT, and STX, models, launching the big Ford from 0-60 mph in a rather impressive 6.1 seconds. Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims offer 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Topping the power range, the Timberline and Stealth Expedition up the output to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet. All models are fitted with a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard with a rear-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive is available for all trims.

With its body-on-frame construction, the Expedition unsurprisingly feels somewhat truck-like from behind the wheel with light steering, noticeable body roll, and average agility, but the same can be said for its full-size SUV counterparts. The standard trailer towing capacity for the 2022 Expedition is 6,600 pounds with the standard wheelbase, with 4X4 models offering a slightly lower pulling capacity at 6,500 pounds. When equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Towing Package ($795), max towing increases to 9,000 pounds in Expedition Max models and up to 9,300 pounds for 4X2, standard wheelbase versions.

The Timberline Expedition, a new off-road trim, is an attractive option for those wanting to hit the trails. It features 10.6-inches of ground clearance, besting the Grand Wagoneer’s 10 inches, and it is fitted with the same underbody protection as the F-150 Raptor, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires, a two-speed transfer case, a wider track with improved approach and departure angles, Trail Turn Assist, a sport-tuned suspension, and the most potent version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine.

As expected fuel economy isn't stellar, and the Timberline and Stealth versions are the least fuel-efficient of the group at 17 mpg (16 /19) EPA-estimated city/hwy. while the standard wheelbase with rear-wheel drive is the most frugal model with a fuel economy of 19 combined mpg (17/23) city/hwy.

Exterior Design

Gray Ford Expedition Stealth Edition Performance
Ford

While the Expedition’s exterior styling has been updated for 2022, the visual cues that differentiate the refreshed model are minor. The accent bars on the grille now extend into the headlight housing, the middle grille intake of the prior model has been deleted, and the faux intakes ahead of the front wheels that house the fog lights have been tweaked. The taillights have also been refreshed, but otherwise, the Expedition remains generally unchanged. Its boxy styling takes advantage of interior space and retains its high beltline, forward-to-back slanting C-pillar, and black D-pillar framing the rear glass.

The new Stealth Edition seen here is more meant for pounding the pavement than the trails as it also includes the 440 horsepower version of the EcoBoost engine and optional adaptive dampers ($995). It adds visual features like a gloss-black grille, mirror caps, head and taillight housings, red brake calipers, and black, 22-inch aluminum wheels.

As in prior years, the Expedition is available with either a standard, 122.5-inch wheelbase or the 131.6-inch Max version which increases cargo volume behind the second row from 67 to 80 cubic feet and from 21 to 36 cubic feet behind the third row. Expedition Max models are nearly 12 inches longer overall and are equipped with a 27.8-gallon fuel tank compared to 23.2 gallons in the standard model.

Though a side-by-side of the 2021 and 2022 models may be needed to notice the exterior updates, the 2022 Expedition’s refresh is far more obvious in the cabin. The dash has been redesigned to be more modern and shares similarities with the F-150 pickup. A 12-inch infotainment system now sits atop a stack of knobs and dials in base versions. Additionally, higher-end models are fitted with a 15-inch vertical tablet in lieu of the 12-inch screen and traditional dials, the same setup found in the Mustang Mach-E. Forward of the touchscreen are controls for drive mode, an available wireless charging bay, and a rotary gear lever.

Ford has also done away with some of the harsher plastics present in prior models with upgraded materials, including revamped front seats. Cloth seats are standard in lower trims with leather-trimmed seats equipped in Limited models and full leather upholstery in King Ranch iterations. A leather-wrapped power tilt/telescopic steering wheel is standard. An 8.0-inch digital display and analog gauges are standard, with upper trims and an available 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster. Connected built-in Navigation, a Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker sound system, WiFi hotspot, and a SiriusXM radio are all available depending on the trim level you choose.

The Expedition can be had strictly as a five-seater in XL STX models with a standard 60/40 split, power-folding rear bench seat for the third row in all other models. Second-row captain’s chairs are optional in several trims and standard in Limited and Kind Ranch trims. No matter the guise, the Expedition puts practicality at the forefront with plenty of passenger room in all three rows and a voluminous cargo area.

The 2022 Expedition is available to purchase now with pricing starting at $53,375 for a base XL STX model with the top-trim Platinum iteration commanding $79,560. Prices exclude the $1,795 destination charge. Opting for four-wheel drive in any model adds about $3,000 to the asking price. Mid-range Limited models ($68,750) present a significant step-up in price compared to the XL and XLT versions but are fitted with a host of desirable amenities for family hauling and better interior materials that should please most buyers.

The Limited trim also opens the opportunity for upgrading to the Stealth version and its blacked-out appearance and additional power, though it does increase the price to nearly $79,000, which is still on par with the segment for the amenities offered. You can also choose from a plethora of genuine Ford accessories to further spruce up your Expedition.

Main Competition

2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
Stellantis
Side-by-side shot of a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer

While the mid-size and compact SUV ranks have grown immensely over the last decade, the large SUV class is still fairly limited, though there is a new player in the Jeep Wagoneer and its larger, Wagoneer L, stablemate. As Ford takes on the newcomer it continues to closely battle the Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Nissan Armada.

The Wagoneer and Expedition are closely matched on interior space, power, and towing, but the Jeep entrenches into luxury territory in upper trims with its tech, creature comforts, and appointments. However, the Ford is also particularly less expensive in lower trims. Conversely, the Expedition is more expensive than the Suburban in its base trim while Chevy offers a more fuel-efficient diesel and more cargo space, but the Ford packs more power, can tow more, and has a larger touchscreen.

The Toyota Sequoia has been completely refreshed for 2023, making it more closely competitive with the Expedition, but the Ford holds the edge in entry-level price (it’s about $5,000 cheaper), offers a more spacious third row, a larger cargo area, and the availability of the BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

With a fairly limited number of options, the full-size SUV segment is highly competitive and if you are in the market for a large full-size SUV, you should shop around to find one that best fits your needs and budget. But as Ford has done for nearly 30 years, the Expedition continues to be an attractive choice in the class.
