Turbos are the go-to performance boosters in the drag racing world, and we’ve seen everything from a turbo Honda Grom to a turbo Harley-Davidson Road King on a drag strip. Taking this up a notch is Australia’s Extreme Creations which has now plonked a turbo in Yamaha’s newest R model, the YZF-R7. Not only that, but the shop has also taken the turbo R7 to the drag strip and the quarter-mile times put some supercars to shame.

The Turbo Yamaha R7 Puts Out 112 Horsepower

The turbo kit fits so well, the R7 looks exactly like its stock self

In its stock guise, the Yamaha R7 doesn’t exactly scream performance as it employs the MT-07-derived 689cc, twin-cylinder engine that pumps out 73.4PS (~72 horsepower). The horsepower is by no means “impressive” for a middleweight, and this is where the turbo comes in. According to Extreme Creations, the turbo R7 produces a dyno-tested 112 horsepower, equating to around 120 horsepower in the real world.

This bump is courtesy of the extensive turbo kit which comprises a GT15 7.5PSI turbo with stainless turbines and gaskets, paired with bespoke headers, K&N air filter, and a freeflow exhaust. Plus, all parts are neatly housed inside the stock bodywork, so no one will know what your R7 is packing. Until, of course, you leave them in the dust. Oh, and if this isn’t fast enough, you also have the option to boost the output to 125 horsepower (for extra money and parts).

The Turbo Yamaha R7 Is Seriously Fast

So what does all this mean in a straight line? Well, seriously fast quarter-mile times, that’s what! The shop recently took the turbo R7 to a drag strip where it recorded a 10.9-second quarter-mile at over 125mph. For reference, this is just 0.3 seconds slower than a 200-HP Harley-Davidson and as fast as a 2016 Nissan GT-R (via CarWow). We also believe the turbo R7 will go faster once it boasts a dedicated drag racing engine map and grippier tires.

The Yamaha R7 Turbo Kit Is Quite Affordable

The turbo Yamaha R7 is undeniably impressive, and its price tag makes matters even sweeter. Extreme Creations has priced its Yamaha R7 turbo kit at AUD 4,275 (~$2,950), which includes the aforementioned components. You can also throw in other performance upgrades for extra cash, and even get priority DHL shipping for $245 (to New York). Couple this with the Yamaha R7’s $9,199 MSRP, and you’ll basically get a rampant beast for under $13,000 (considering you can put it on yourself). That's a pretty sweet deal, isn’t it?
