Ever since BMW introduced the R 18 cruiser, it’s been urging bike shops to customize them. As a result, we’ve seen several impressive custom R 18s, and the trend continues this year too. A more recent example is an R 18 built by Germany’s Procar Automobile GmbH, which has transformed the cruiser into an American chopper. It also shows just how good the motorcycle custom scene is in Germany.
Custom BMW R 18 ‘Bloody Sunrise’ By Procar Automobile
Dubbed ‘Bloody Sunrise’ by its makers, the R 18 features a number of notable updates. The most eye-catching element (in our opinion) is the candy red livery complete with stenciled graphics and airbrushed details. The chassis, swingarm, and custom fenders also feature the same finish for peak attention to detail. In the meantime, the eye-pleasing, custom three-piece chrome wheels (21/18-inch) add some contrast and old-school touch to the package.
Like the aesthetics, the ergonomics are quite different too. The stock seat makes way for an old-school sprung seat while the stock, swooping handlebar is replaced by a chrome-finished ape hanger. This, coupled with the flat footrests, should result in an American chopper-like riding posture and make riders feel like a rock star. Once aboard, you’ll also notice the repositioned instrument cluster that is now embellished into the fuel tank.
Since this is a BMW-sanctioned process, the R 18’s 1,802cc, boxer engine remains largely untouched. It boasts custom chrome casings and free-flow exhaust but remains unchanged at large. Thanks to this, its power output - 91 horsepower and 116 pound-feet - should also be more or less the same. Similarly, the telescopic forks, monoshock, and brakes are as it is, albeit with aesthetic tweaks to match the new attire. Finally, not-so-noticeable updates like rear fender-mounted LED indicators, lowered headlight, custom mirrors, and the extra-wide rear wheel bring everything together.
Can You Buy This Custom BMW R 18 Chopper?
This custom R 18 is part of BMW’s annual custom competition, and you can vote for it if you dig it. If not, you can head to BMW Customizing Contest, check the other builds, and vote for them instead. We believe the Bloody Sunrise will only go on sale once the competition is over, probably with a high price tag, especially if it wins. So we’d suggest you get in touch with an American custom shop instead to not only save on freight, but to get your R 18 built exclusively for you.
