Performance, luxury, and innovation launch the first-ever electrified all-wheel-drive Corvette – the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. Faster than a Z06, more powerful than a C8 Stingray, able to traverse snow-covered ground, even on a grade – it’s a Chevy – it’s a 'Vette – it’s a 2024 E-Ray Hybrid.

The Tesla Model S Plaid may have brought dynamic track-ready speed to the electrified daily driver; however, with a 2.5-second 0- 60 MPH and a 10.5-second quarter mile, Chevy’s E-Ray is bringing sexy back.

2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray Performance And Capability

Chevrolet

A 3/4 view of a 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray driving on a bridge at night.

Adding a 160-horsepower, front-mounted electric drive unit to its 495-horsepower mid-mounted LT2 6.2-liter V-8, the E-Ray produces a combined 655 horses and 595 pound-feet of torque. It may be just shy of the Z06's 670 horsepower, but the E-Ray gets the drop on its gas-powered predecessor, besting the Z06 by a tenth of a second in a 0 - 60 MPH acceleration comparison. Dare we call it the new King of the American Dragstrip?

Built on the architecture of the mid-engine C8, the center backbone provides rigidity for open-roof driving and now houses the E-Ray's high-voltage lithium-ion battery within the central tunnel of the body structure. This is a hint that Chevy had the E-Ray in mind – if not in the process – at the onset of design for the eighth-generation Corvette.

Front axle electrification enhances the handling and performance that C8 owners are accustomed to while pushing the E-Ray into all-weather capability. The electric drive unit's 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery creates 160 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, making the E-Ray the first all-wheel-drive – all-season Corvette, expanding the places and conditions that can be traveled, including snowy ground on the road to a 'Vette owners favorite ski resort.

The pushrod V-8 develops 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, delivered by an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both could be found in a standard C8 Stingray. A plug-in charge is not utilized.

Although accommodations had to be made for front suspension changes in the electrified model – including an oil cooler for the hybrid components – there is no noticeable sacrifice to the storage capacity of the frunk – another plus for drivers looking for their newest grand tourer.

A soft-close hood appears as a new perk on the 2024 E-Ray, as well as all 2024 C8s. The self-closing cargo unit will eliminate the once-needed firm hand pressure for final closure – putting smiles on the faces of 'Vette owners as handprints on the frunk disappear.

Suspension on the E-Ray vs. the eighth-gen Z06 can be described as softer and calmer. Lacking stiffer springs that maximize Z06 track performance, the E-Ray’s smooth ride is more on par with the standard C8 / Z51 package.

Focusing on comfort over its ability for blistering track speeds doesn’t force any compramise in the E-Ray’s launch, and most notably in the cold, the E-Ray’s all-wheel-drive hooks up better and accelerates faster than the Z06. Good grip is obvious, but is the 2024 E-Ray burnout capable? The answer is yes. Disabling Traction Control, followed by a short series of pushes and pulls – similar to Burnout mode on the standard C8 – provides Chevy’s quick workaround to lay a patch.

Stopping power comes in terms of carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes – six-piston fronts and four for the rears - the same as the Z06; however, at no extra charge on the E-Ray, which comes in handy with the increased curb weight of the E-Ray. With up to 400 pounds added, depending on Carbon Fiber options, Chevy's electrified Coupe weighs in at 3,774 pounds, the droptop at 3,856 pounds.

Although the E-Ray is a hybrid, the sound of its exhaust retains the deep throaty growl of a beloved V-8. A definite plus to those whose heart still belongs to the muscle car era. For others who may like a sleeper approach, at least initially, the E-Ray has the ability for Stealth mode. Transferring operation into full-electric, Stealth mode terminates all roar of its thundering V8 and puts the E-Ray into a whispering, covert ascent for speeds up to 45 MPH on distances of three- to four miles.

The 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray's EPA fuel economy ratings have not been released. The MPGe is expected to be similar to the Stingray. Specific driving conditions that allow Active Fuel Management will use the electric motor to extend four-cylinder operation. The fuel tank capacity is 18.5 gallons.

The E-Ray’s wide-body stance resembles the Z06 as opposed to the standard C8 Stingray. The added 2.5 inches in the front and 3.5 inches in the rear facilitate the widest GM all-season tire ever on a production vehicle. Michelin Pilot Sport – all-season tires are standard. A Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S ZP summer-only tire is optional and will maximize performance.

A milder wheel design in a subtle color-matched finish – unique to the E-Ray – was added to appeal to a more luxury-minded driver. Other aesthetic differences on the E-Ray hint at opulence rather than the visual aggressiveness such as the black panel side air intakes which are subdued on the E-Ray in a body-color-matched premium finish.

The quad exhaust finds its way to the rear of the E-Ray on either side of the vehicle in the same setup as the standard C8, unlike the four centered exits on the Z06.

Interior Quality And Technology

2024 Chevy E-Ray Interior
Chevrolet
An interior shot of a 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray

Mimicking much of the C8 Stingray's interior, the E-Ray's cabin is rooted in luxury finishes and a driver-focused cockpit. Premium leather, perforated insets, and available contrasting accents are combined with many optional carbon fiber components such as the gauge cluster, door panel accents, and steering wheel, to optimize the E-Ray’s look and feel.

The familiar row of controls on the C8 center tunnel remains in place. Two new clickable options are present just below the tunnel on the driver’s side at leg height – Charge+ and Auto Start/Stop. E-Ray badging brands the electric hybrid on the steering wheel and door sill. Nothing can ruin a plan faster than a low-battery alert, and Chevy didn’t overlook that fact. With the Charge+ mode, the E-Ray allows a quick recharge of the eAWD battery with a simple push of a button.

But what is E-Ray’s Charge+ and when would a driver use it? Picture a covert op in Stealth mode – out of the garage and down the street without waking the neighbors. You’re about to arrive at the track, and notice you need juice for the electric drive unit to maximize your pass. A quick push on Charge+, a few miles on the road, and a full charge is possible. When Charge+ is engaged, added drag on the E-Ray will help boost the charge to the battery. Charge+ should be activated only at speeds between 15 and 60 MPH.

Main Competition

2022 McLaren Artura
McLaren
2022 McLaren Artura on a racetrack

As the first electrified Corvette, the 2024 Chevy E-Ray hybrid comes to market with its main competition as the McClaren Artura, and the Ferrari 296 GTB. The trio of hybridized mid-engine two-seaters has a comparable wide-stance aesthetic.

The 2023 Artura Hybrid, a plug-in, electrified supercar, shows performance similar to the E-Ray with McLaren’s first use of a twin-turbo V-6. Its gas-powered engine is paired with a battery-driven electric motor for a combined 671 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. The battery-only range on the Artura stretches 11 miles compared to four miles for Chevy’s hybrid. While the E-Ray and Artura develop power in the same range, the starting price of the McLaren is double that of the Chevy E-Ray. Orders for the McLaren Artura start at $237,500.

Another plug-in hybrid, the 2023 Ferrari 296GTB also marries a twin-turbo V-6 with electric propulsion. The power from the 296GTB dusts the E-Ray and Artura as rivals with a combined 819 horsepower. The all-electric range of this hybrid is double that of the E-Ray at eight miles and its price tag is triple, starting at $338,200.

So why is the E-Ray Chevy's best Corvette to date? Well for starters, the fact that we're comparing America's flagship sportscar in the same breath as these European exotics, that cost twice if not thrice as much, is saying a lot about how far the Corvette has come. Also, with the added benefit of electrification and all-wheel drive, the E-Ray offers all-weather and all-season traction and is the most usable Corvette to date.
