BMW’s Hommage lineup launched back in 2008 with the M1 Hommage, a model that essentially celebrated the legendary M1’s 30th birthday. Unfortunately, BMW never brought back the M1 beyond that concept or made a successor to it (unless you count the M8, which we wouldn’t), but the 2015 3.0 CSL Hommage concept will be making a comeback. A wide-eyed, big-grilled, thick-bodied concept from 2015 entering production in 2022? It sounds pretty crazy, and it might be, but wait until you hear how limited and how expensive it’s going to be.
According to a new report from BMW Blog, the production version of the 3.0 CSL will be based on the M4 CSL, and it will stick with RWD. This means there won’t be any weight gain from the addition of an xDrive system and it will keep all of you purists out there happy. Even better yet, the S58, twin-turbo, inline-six is expected to produce up to 600 horsepower – a big improvement over the M4 Competition’s 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. A manual transmission will apparently be the only gearbox of choice.
BMW claims the M4 Competition Coupe is capable of hitting 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds, and the new 3.0 CSL is said to be cable of hitting the same benchmark in 3.5 seconds and will be able to cross the 300 km/h barrier with ease. This performance does come courtesy of the increase in power output, but BMW has also gone to extreme lengths to reduce weight. This includes deleting the rear seats, simplifying the instrument panel, lightweight seats, smaller battery, and as much carbon fiber as possible. In the end, it should weigh some 1,550 kg or 3,417 pounds.
Of course, all of this only truly matters for the handful of people that will get their hands on one, as this baby is going to be extremely rare. BMW is capping production at just 50 examples, none of which are destined for the United States, and all of which will likely be spoken for by the time it debuts. Even if it’s not sold out at that time, anyone that tries to get their hands on one will have to shell out somewhere between €600,000 and €700,000 ($635,000 - $740,000).
All of this said, we should see the new 2023 BMW 3.0 CSL make its debut before the end of 2022 to celebrate the M division's 50th birthday. The only question now is whether or not the 2016 3.0 CSL Hommage R will also make a jump into limited production.
