It is hard to think of a place where at least hybrid vehicles wouldn't be capable. When built properly, the added power from an electric motor can help overcome most obstacles. While it does make them heavier using both a conventional gasoline or diesel engine and an electric motor, even vehicles that are only electrically assisted can power through harsh terrain because of the instantly available torque from the electric motor. However, some EV startups see every market as capable for electric use, including off road use. In fact, even major brands like Jeep have begun their push into off-road-ready EVs.

The Off-Road EV Market Is Growing

The off-road market is one that EV has not conquered just yet, but Glasgow-startup All-Terrain All Electric and their Munro are up for the challenge. While it may not have the off-road history that Jeep is pushing for with their Wrangler Magneto, the Munro is more than capable for off-road use although maybe not as a daily driver. ATAE has developed the Munro EV for the purpose of mostly off-road related work such as in the woods, forests, farms, and other locations similar. While it may not be the most design-oriented in terms of luxury, the Munro is incredible in its element.

The ATAE Munro Is Incredibly Capable

The chassis, suspension, and bodywork of the Munro comes from the Foers Ibex F8, an off-roader designed to be similar to the Land Rover Defender but at a fraction of the price. The Munro receives the ATAE drivetrain, meaning the US-sourced 205 horsepower electric motors turn what is normally a gas-powered baby overlander into an all-electric off-road machine! To stay lighter weight, the body panels are aluminum, in addition to the ease of repairs for the body panels. These, plus the durability of the already-proven chassis and suspension, makes the ATAE Munro a seriously impressive vehicle.

The Munro Is Capable And Durable

Cofounder Ross Anderson said he “wants to create a vehicle that you can get into with muddy boots, throw a bale of hay in the back of to feed the horses, then go out camping for the weekend”. As an almost-luxury overland offroader, the Munro comes in at just under $50,000 and with options like an extended range battery, the price will climb higher. For a range of 150 miles, that may be a lot of money but it is incredibly capable - more so than just about any other off-road vehicle save for vehicles like the Bolinger.

If You Want One, You'd Better Act Fast

For a first-generation of a vehicle, Ross Anderson and Russ Peterson have wasted no time or effort with the ATAE Munro. After only getting started in 2019, the team has made a vehicle capable of towing one ton on any terrain. While their rivals come in at almost $20,000 more, the Munro is almost a great deal for what it offers. There is still a bit of time before it is readily available for purchase, but prepurchase reservations can be done currently, but with only a few thousand planned there will not be any set dealerships to purchase through.
