As far as car movies go, 1968's Bullitt has to be one of the most legendary cinema productions ever made. According to the Deadline, the Ferruccio Lamborghini biopic will not be the only recent cinematic treat for car enthusiasts as Steven Spielberg is heading a remake of the iconic film starring Steve McQueen and the Ford Mustang. Even better, actor Bradley Cooper just signed a deal after long negotiations and will play the lead role of no-nonsense cop Frank Bullitt.

Not A Straight Remake Of The Original

Sources indicate that the new movie will not be a straight remake of the 1968 original but will take a new angle in which the story will be more focused around San Francisco cop Frank Bullitt. In the original movie, the main character was chasing a mysterious mob boss who killed his witness. The movie is regarded as one of Steve McQueen’s more iconic roles and has perhaps the iconic car chase scene.

Deadline reporter, Justin Kroll, said, “[Cooper] and Spielberg have been talking about the character and what a new take on the story would look like going all the way back to the pandemic." Cooper is no stranger to action movie remakes as he played one of the main roles in the 2010 film A-Team, which was a movie adaptation of the 1983-1987 TV series about a group of ex-millitary, vigilantes/mercenaries.

Aside from both movie titles falling into the action genre, another thing in common thread is both feature vehicles that would become two of the most iconic movie cars – the A-Team’s modified, GMC Vandura minivan and Frank Bullitt’s 1968 Ford Mustang 390 Fastback. Sadly, not much is known about the Spielberg-directed version of Bullitt, but apparently, it will not completely align with the 1968 original directed by Peter Yates.

While we have no doubt Bradley Cooper is the man for the role, what are really curious about is what cars will be featured in the new movie. At this point, we don’t even know whether the movie will be based in the late 1960s or in more modern times. But its likely none of the main characters will drive an EV. If there’s one thing we know about Spielberg’s movie-making skills, it is that we can expect an homage to the original, so a good dose of V-8 muscle seems likely.
